something i enjoyed at cmu that i haven’t observed elsewhere during my time as faculty is regular on-campus social occasions, typically organized by grad students, where faculty & students *both* regularly attend. it meant students got to know faculty other than their advisors outside the classroom context and it felt so key to being an integrated community rather than a loose collection of research silos

@chrisamaphone this is good. i used to be that guy who's maintaining good relations with bith students & school faculties in my undergrad school in China. but here the language barrier is making me kinda introvert when communicating with local ppl.
